Governance & Leadership

The National Site Standard (NSS) has been created to raise workforce standards across the construction industry through independent governance, transparent leadership and industry collaboration. Our governance model ensures the Standard remains impartial, accountable and focused on delivering long-term value for the sector.

Our Founder

Renee Preston

Founder & Chief Executive Officer

The National Site Standard was founded by Renee Preston with a vision to create the UK's first independent workforce governance standard for the construction industry.

As Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Renee is responsible for the strategic direction, growth and day-to-day leadership of NSS, working alongside industry partners, clients, government and education providers to drive national adoption of the Standard.

While Renee leads the organisation operationally, the National Site Standard is governed independently. In her role as Chief Executive Officer, she is accountable to the Governance Board for delivering the organisation's strategy, objectives and long-term vision.

What is the Governance Board?

The Governance Board provides the independent oversight that protects the integrity, credibility and long-term independence of the National Site Standard.

Made up of respected leaders from across construction, housing, planning, legal and public policy, the Board ensures that NSS remains impartial, transparent and representative of the wider industry.

The Board's role is not to manage the day-to-day operation of the organisation. Instead, it provides strategic oversight, challenges decision-making where appropriate, safeguards the independence of the Standard and holds the Executive Team accountable for its delivery.

By bringing together expertise from across the built environment, the Governance Board helps ensure the National Site Standard continues to evolve in line with industry needs while maintaining the confidence of employers, clients, government and the wider construction sector.

Purpose of the Governance Board

The Governance Board exists to:

  • Protect the independence and integrity of the National Site Standard.

  • Provide strategic oversight and long-term direction.

  • Hold the Executive Team accountable for delivering the organisation's objectives.

  • Promote transparency, good governance and robust decision-making.

  • Ensure the Standard continues to reflect the needs of the construction industry, clients, government and communities.

  • Support the continuous development and credibility of the National Site Standard.

Our Governance Board

The Governance Board brings together independent leaders from across the built environment, providing a broad range of expertise and perspectives.
